Position title: Charity Trustee

Location: In and around York + virtual

Commitment: The board of Trustees currently meets monthly via Teams.

Each Trustee actively assists in the day to day running of the charity with a variable and flexible workload. 

 

Role overview:​

Are you passionate about animal welfare? Do you want to make a real difference to the lives of cats in our community? We are seeking a dedicated individual who shares our values to join our board of trustees!
The current board of Trustees consists of a mix of professional people from various industries and with a mixed skill set. BORNY Trustees have the opportunity to be involved in all the different aspects of the charity, from business strategy to hands on animal care.

About Us: Our vision is a world where humans treat cats and kittens with compassion, respect and understanding. We aim to alleviate suffering and positively influence welfare standards for cats and kittens in our community and in our care.

Our Mission: To providing a safe haven for cats and kittens in need. We assess and consider the individual needs of every cat, ensuring first-rate holistic care is given.  We pride ourselves in maintaining high-quality veterinary support provisions to alleviate suffering and optimise quality of life.

Treating every feline with compassion, dignity and understanding our aim is never to turn away a cat in need of our help – this means we are committed to a non-selective intake policy. Subject to space availability, but irrespective of, condition, age, temperament or health. We do all we can to help any cats who find themselves in need.

The future of BORNY is sustainable with the help of a strong trustee board, helping to lead the rescue through the challenges of the charity sector and animal welfare. We can continue to make a real difference to the future of cat welfare in our local community with a focussed team of volunteers, dedicated to preventing cruelty and taking the charity forward to do the very best we can for feline victims.

 

Key responsibilities:​​

  • To attend and actively participate in board meetings- currently undertaken monthly via Teams.

  • Contribute regularly and actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in making balanced and adequately informed decisions.

  • To give strategic direction- contributing to overall policy, and shaping the definition of clear goals and objectives.

  • Oversee the day to day running of the charity and volunteer teams.

  • Oversee financial management and fundraising efforts.

  • Adhere to and uphold the policies and procedures that BORNY has in place.

  • To represent and actively promote BORNY at events, and through personal and business networks.

 

The legal duties of a charity Trustee are as follows:

  • Ensure your charity is carrying out its purposes for the public benefit

  • Comply with your charity’s governing document and the law

  • Act in your charity’s best interests

  • Manage your charity’s resources responsibly

  • Act with reasonable care and skill

  • Ensure your charity is accountable.


What we’re looking for:​

  • Someone who has true passion for animal welfare: A genuine love for cats and a commitment to their well-being, which aligns with our vision and mission.

  • Candidates with a background in animal welfare and nonprofit management or related fields will be highly valued.

  • Someone who can contribute to the strategic direction of the charity and help us achieve our long-term goals.

  • You must be able to work effectively as part of a team and respect the opinions of others.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to advocate for our mission.

  • ​Proficiency in basic computer skills with experience in using Microsoft Word, Teams, Excel and Docusign.

  • We need innovative thinkers who can come up with new ideas to tackle challenges and improve our operations.

  • You will need to have, or be prepared to gain understanding of the charity sector.

  • You will need to be able to work collaboratively with fellow trustees and volunteers. We are specifically looking for someone to contribute constructively to Board discussions and decision-making, and bring ideas and energy to the work of the Board.
